Innovative exhibition shows how cultures through history express their understanding of time: display projects lifespan of Universe onto ceiling of Queens House
Audio visual systems specialists, Integrated Circles, has completed an innovative display in the Inigo Jones-designed Queens House, in the centre of the National Maritime Museum. The display expresses the lifespan of the Universe using a rolling sequence of images of stellar objects taken by the Hubble telescope, and is a key part of the Museum’s Story of Time exhibition.
The Story of Time exhibition aims to question perceptions of time and show the ways different cultures have expressed their understanding of time. It combines exhibits from the arts and science, displaying important and famous artefacts from around the world to demonstrate theories about the creation of time, how people regulate time, how time is pictured and experienced, and the end of time.
As a central part of the exhibition, the series of 24 stellar images from the Hubble telescope are morphed into each other to give a continuous 2½ minute programme. The programme is projected onto the ceiling of the Great Hall of the Queens House’s from a moveable projector sited on the floor some 32 feet below, giving the effect of looking up directly into a large star-scape at night.
To give a continuous programme, the Hubble images were manipulated and stored on an Integrated Circles VideoStore 2, a rack-mounting, hard disk-based video player which stores up to one hour of broadcast-quality MPEG 2 video for replay on video monitors or large projection systems. In this installation, the VideoStore is driving a high-brightness LCD projector.
The accompanying music soundtrack was recorded onto an Integrated Circles SoundStore, which gives reliable, high-quality repeat audio playback. The soundtrack is stored digitally, so there are no tapes to wear out and no moving parts to maintain.
According to Simon Beer, technical director of Integrated Circles: “The Story of Time installation was technically challenging, but has proven to be an excellent showcase for the image reproduction and projection capabilities of our new VideoStores.”
The Story of Time exhibition is to run until October 2000 in the National Maritime Museum.
